Orbital Lasers and InspeCity Jointly Publish White Paper on Integrated Operations of Space Laser and Robotics Technologies

Aug 9, 2025

Orbital Lasers Co., Ltd. (Head Office: Minato-ku, Tokyo; CEO: Tadanori Fukushima; hereinafter "our company"), a developer of innovative space laser technologies, has jointly published a white paper with InspeCity Space Laboratories Pvt. Ltd. (Head Office: Mumbai, Maharashtra, India; Chief Executive Officer: Arindrajit Chowdhury; hereinafter "InspeCity") proposing an operational concept for on-orbit services that combine our laser ablation technology with InspeCity's robotics technology to promote a sustainable space environment.

Key Features of the Proposed Integrated Architecture
In recent years, the number of artificial satellites in orbit has increased rapidly, and the resulting space debris poses a serious threat to current and future missions. Many of these debris objects exhibit rotational motion or vibration, making them difficult to handle with physical capture methods.
To address this issue, the white paper proposes a three-phase integrated architecture, which includes:

  • Non-contact detumbling: Using our high-power space laser, debris exhibiting rotational and vibrational motion is irradiated remotely, enabling controlled motion and safe stabilization.

  • Capture and deorbit by robotic arm: Once stabilized, the target is grasped with high precision and deorbited safely using InspeCity’s 7DoF robotic arm.

  • Multi-target operation: After completing one operation cycle, the same platform can address multiple targets consecutively, improving operational efficiency and ensuring mission sustainability.

This concept systematizes the previously challenging “removal of rotating debris” into a feasible operational model, opening new possibilities for on-orbit services and debris removal.

Please refer to the white paper for more details.
